Morrison had an eighth-inning sacrifice fly
08-27-11

ST. Premier Jay Cutler Jerseys . PETERSBURG, Fla. - Alex Cobb made sure he would have no regrets in his final start before returning to the minors. Cobb pitched effectively into the seventh inning, Johnny Damon hit his 500th double and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the sliding Florida Marlins 7-4 on Saturday night. "A wonderful job by a young guy," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "Great poise. Really good stuff. Hes going to be a very good major league pitcher." Cobb (2-0) gave up two runs, scattered three hits, walked two and struck out two in 6 1-3 innings. The rookie right-hander has been filling in for the injured Jeff Niemann, who is scheduled to be reinstated from the 15-day disabled list to start Monday nights game at Milwaukee. After his strong outing Saturday, the Rays confirmed that Cobb was being optioned to triple-A Durham to make room for Niemann. "It was a bonus to even be up here," Cobb said. "Its only going to help me with my career moving forward. Ill use it to my advantage." Damon, with an opposite-field bloop double to left in the first, became just the 11th player all-time to have 500 doubles, 100 triples, 200 homers, and 2,500 hits. "Its awesome," Damon said. "It means so much." All of the other players accomplishing the feat -- George Brett, Lou Gehrig, Goose Goslin, Rogers Hornsby, Willie Mays, Paul Molitor, Stan Musial, Babe Ruth, Al Simmons and Robin Yount -- are in baseballs Hall of Fame. "When you talk about deserving the Hall of Fame, absolutely, that kind of performance deserves not only top consideration, but acception," Maddon said. Logan Morrison had two RBIs for the Marlins, who have lost nine straight and dropped to 1-17 in June. "Same story," Florida manager Edwin Rodriguez said. "One thing for sure, those guys, theyre giving it 100 per cent. You see the intensity on the bench. Theyre pulling for each other. Its just not happening." Sam Fuld hit a run-scoring single and Reid Brignac drove in run with a double off Ricky Nolasco (4-3) during the second as the Rays went ahead 3-1. Casey Kotchmans third-inning RBI double made it 4-1. Florida took the lead in the first on Morrisons RBI grounder. The Rays tied it at one in the bottom half when Damon hit his 500th double and later scored on Matt Joyces sacrifice fly. Damon singled in the fifth to tie Jimmie Foxx for 72nd place on the career hits list with 2,646. Joyce extended the lead to 5-1 on another sac fly in the fifth. Two runs scored one inning later when third baseman Greg Dobbs was charged with an error for dropping Joyces two-out pop fly with bases loaded. Nolasco allowed five runs and eight hits over five innings. The right-hander was coming off a start last Monday against Arizona in which he gave up nine runs -- five earned -- in three innings of 12-9 loss. Rodriguez tweaked his lineup, having recently acquired Dewayne Wise hit first and dropping the slumping Hanley Ramirez from the top of the lineup to sixth. Ramirez, who entered hitting just .201, had a single in two at-bats and walked twice. Cobb retired 10 in a row before allowing a leadoff single in the fifth to Ramirez. The second run charged to Cobb came in the seventh when reliever Adam Russell allowed an inherited runner to score on a wild pitch. Morrison had an eighth-inning sacrifice fly and Omar Infante added an RBI single in the ninth that cut the deficit to 7-4. NOTES: Rays 3B Evan Longoria is receiving treatment for a sore spot on his left foot. "Its nothing dramatic," Maddon said. "Hes fine." The 2010 all-star went 0 for 4 and has nine hits in 47 at-bats this month. ... Florida OF Mike Stanton, scheduled to be the DH, was scratched due to a right eye infection. Rodriguez said Stanton saw an eye doctor, who reported there is no major problem. The manager said there was a slight chance Stanton could play Sunday. ... Dallas had lost five straight at home before defeating Edmonton and Atlanta in consecutive games last week.CALGARY -- The Calgary Stampeders are poised to have three receivers with over 1,000 yards in a season for the first time in a decade. Nik Lewis (1,151) is already there, while Romby Bryant (980) and Ken-Yon Rambo (968) could get there Friday as the Stampeders host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (TSN 10 p.m. ET). They would be the first Stamps trio to accomplish that since Allen Pitts, Marc Boerigter and Travis Moore in 2000. "To me, its a huge accomplishment to see three guys reach that plateau," said Calgary quarterback Henry Burris, who is the man in charge of distributing the ball to them. But getting all three into the 1,000-yard club Friday might be difficult against what has suddenly become the toughest defence in the CFL. Hamilton (9-7) has given up just 17 points, including one touchdown, in their last three games which were all wins. The Tiger-Cats signed defensive end Stevie Baggs on Sept. 16. He has 18 tackles, four sacks, one interception and three fumble recoveries -- two for touchdowns -- in the four games hes played for Hamilton . Baggs played for Saskatchewan last year and was released from a tryout with the NFLs Arizona Cardinals in early September. Baggs was key in Hamilton s 40-3 shock of the Montreal Alouettes last week, with four tackles, an interception, one pass knock down and returned a fumble recovery 80 yards for a touchdown. The man Burris calls Mr. Shakespeare, because Baggs has a talent for prose, and the rest of the Ticat defence will test a Stampeder offence that has run hot and cold lately. "He was a big pickup for those guys and its going to make things that much tougher for us as far as the passing and running game on Friday," Burris said. Calgary (11-5) clinched the West Division last week, but not with a win. The day after the Stamps lost 36-31 to the B.C. Lions at home, the Roughriders fell to Edmonton and conceded the divisions top seed to Calgary . The Stampeders are 2-4 in their last six games and Fridays game, as well as their regular-season finale against Winnipeg , is meaningless in the standings. But its a chance for Calgary to sharpen their execution for the post-season. "We lost two gamess at home this year and thats embarrassing enough, but the thing is: our next biggest game will be the West final here at home," Burris said. Aaron Rodgers Jerseys. "We need to re-establish our dominance here. What better test than against probably the hottest team in the league right now being Hamilton ?" Calgary squeaked out a 23-22 win at Ivor Wynne Stadium when the two clubs met July 10. The Ticats can clinch second in the East and thus host the semifinal with a win Friday. Montreal has already nailed down first in the East, but Hamilton s first win over the Als in two years has put the Ticats on a roll as the post-season approaches. "Youre in the tournament part of the year and we call that the money part of the season," Baggs said. "One thing I tell the guys is the man who becomes content becomes replaced, so we have to stay humble and hungry and come to work with the same mindset of getting better. Its very important for us to be playing at a high level at this time." Hamilton s Arland Bruce, the CFLs leading receiver, will not play Friday due to what the Ticats have called a lower body injury. "Him being such an impact player for us we felt it was in our best interests not to press him this week," Hamilton head coach Marcel Bellefeuille said. "The important thing is to have him 100 per cent for the playoffs." Among the other subplots Friday is the return of former Stampeder kicker Sandro DeAngelis to McMahon. DeAngelis is fourth all-time in points after five seasons in Calgary . He was named the top Canadian player when the Stamps won the 2008 Grey Cup. "Im glad this game came later in the season," DeAngelis said. "Playing them the first time was probably the hardest because it was so soon in the season. Im kind of grinning from ear to ear since Ive been here because of so many great memories." Notes: Calgary has activated receiver Landan Talley in an attempt to improve its return game, which ranks second-last in the CFL . . . Hamilton linebacker Shannon James, a Stampeder for four years, will also play his first game in Calgary since he was released in the off-season. ' ' '
